Dr. Byrd has taught English and Humanities at St. Petersburg College since 1990. As a Fulbright Fellow, he taught in Albania in 2011 and has published four books of poetry, many short stories and essays, has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and won the Robert Phillips Chapbook Prize. At SPC, he has been recognized with a Distinguished Faculty Award, the Titan Award for Partnership and Collaboration and a One-Year Sabbatical to research and write a novel. He has helped to create and advise vibrant student groups over the years such as the Student Veterans Association, the Master Learners, Poetry Club and Red Cross Club. A specialist in American literature and Literature and the Environment as well as Creative Writing, Dr. Byrd has taught those courses at SPC as well as at Eckerd College, the University of Tirana, and in community settings. He is proud to have mentored and worked with many notable students such as aeronautical engineer Brittany Achor, literature professor Dr. Matt Blasi, biologist/writers Randy Goggin and Anne Visser Ney and Tampa Review editor and writer Yuly Restrepo, among many other outstanding students.
