I have been in the Health Information Management for 55 years. I started out as a file clerk and over time, worked many jobs throughout the department. I always tried to better myself each time. I was a chart assembler, analyzer, coder, transcriber, Floater-(that meant I could sit in anyone’s seat while they were on vacation and keep the department functioning) eventually I wanted that credential, but family life got in the way! We were living in Pennsylvania and moved to Florida-working full time, I contacted AHIMA and enrolled in their Independent Study Program—by MAIL! In 1992 I achieved my credential ART, now, RHIT. The rest of my career was based in management-I would accept students into our hospital departments to intern them, mentor students who wanted to achieve more, and hired them if we had an opening. By 1999 I started teaching at SPC-this is my way of giving back to a profession that has given me so much! In 2018 I received the Educator of the Year from the Florida Health Information Management Association-and I just keep going—my ROCK through all this has been my husband of 48 years. This is a great profession, but like any, it’s the people that make it up-do your best, you will succeed, that is MY MISSION!
